	Sculptor tortured to death by security forces August 3, 2012 Source: Ifex

(ANHRI/IFEX) - Cairo August 1, 2012 - It's with deep sorrow that ANHRI has learned about Wael Qaston's death, as a result of brutal torture. The Syrian regime has been cracking down on prisoners of conscience and demonstrators who call for freedom. 

The forty-six-year-old Syrian sculptor was detained in a prison affiliated with the security branches in Hams. He suffered serious injuries due to the torture and was sent to a military hospital in Hams where he died. His family was then informed about his death and was asked to remove him from the hospital. 

Qaston is originally from Marmarita, a town located in the countryside in Homs. He was one of the most significant and talented Syrian sculptors, and his work was inspired by women's issues. He took part in the revolution from the beginning and as a Christian, he dismissed all of Asad's allegations that the revolution has a sectarian dimension. 

ANHRI said, "this incident confirms beyond any reasonable doubt that the regime is going to continue to commit brutal crimes as long as no one will hold them accountable and while the international community watches." 

ANHRI added "civilians must be protected from the butchering of the dictator Asad who should be punished for all his crimes against humanity."
