A week passed since Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was last seen entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. Conflicting statements were made on his whereabouts: Saudi sources said he left the consulate shortly after entering it, while Turkish authorities claim that he never got out of the consulate and believe he was murdered.

These allegations raise serious concerns as to the fate of Khashoggi. The two parties should stop passing the buck, immediately reveal his whereabouts and hold human life in much higher regard.

The SKeyes Center for Media and Cultural Freedom calls on the Saudi and Turkish authorities to show full transparency and bring all data on Khashoggi’s whereabouts to public attention and also holds them responsible for his life. Moreover, SKeyes calls on media and journalists committed to freedom of the press, especially in Lebanon, to adopt a unified position in solidarity with Kashoggi, regardless of political considerations or partisan affiliations. It is important to note that Khashoggi has had a good and solid relationship with the Lebanese press and was a member of the 2010 Samir Kassir Award for Freedom of the Press jury. Silence by fellow journalists would be scandalous and disgraceful.
