The political situation in Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, and Syria undeniably reflects the media state, as well as the rights of journalists and photographers in these four countries that the SKeyes Center covers.
In Lebanon, the political situation has a negative impact on press and media freedom. Media institutions and journalists face continuous threats and attacks.
In Jordan, the political and social turmoil had a direct impact on media freedoms and journalists’ rights. The country witnessed episodes of tension and restrictions on press freedom during periods of political change and protests.
Of course, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, as well as the internal Palestinian divisions, affect negatively press freedom in Palestine. Constant escalations and political tensions make it extremely difficult for journalists and photographers to cover the events impartially and safely.
Finally, in Syria, the media environment is unstable and difficult. Thus, journalists cannot freely exercise their profession and are constantly victims of violations.
The above strengthens the deadly media environment and flouted press rights in the region, which reflects the additional challenges and risks that journalists and photographers face while covering sensitive topics in these four countries. They often pay in blood for their freedom, considering the prevailing impunity, which encourages the offenders to commit crimes and even protects them.
