SKeyes Condemns Moustafa Geha’s Assassination Attempt

Sunday , 15 April 2012

Journalist Moustafa Moustafa Geha survived an assassination attempt on Saturday April 14, 2012, in the Damour area south of Beirut. While driving back home, unknown gunmen shot five bullets on his car; he was not injured.

In an interview with the SKeyes Center for Media and Cultural Freedom, Geha said he was still under shock, as bullets only missed him by a few centimeters. He added that he will pursue his quest to bring the assassins of his father, slain journalist Moustafa Geha to justice. Moustafa Geha Sr. was killed on January 15, 1992. No serious probe into this murder ensued. On January 16, 2012, Moustafa Geha announced he was re-opening the judicial case of his father’s assassination.

SKeyes strongly condemns the assassination attempt that targeted Moustafa Geha, which demonstrates the killers’ readiness to do all they can to prevent progress in the probe in the father’s assassination. SKeyes calls security and judiciary authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation in the shooting, and bring perpetrators to justice. Authorities must show they have the courage to break through red lines that for decades have granted impunity to the assassins of journalists. It is only when the Lebanese state will eventually realize it is a state, and act accordingly against the perpetrators of political assassinations, that confidence in institutions can be rebuilt, as a necessary step towards building a safe future for all Lebanese citizens, regardless of their political opinions and affiliations.
