Sakharov Award Ceremony Takes Place in the Absence of Syrian Winners

On October 27, 2011, the European Parliament awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to five Arab spring activists: Mohammad Bouazizi (Tunisia) whose suicide sparked the Tunisian revolution, Egypt’s Asma' Mahfouz, Libyan dissident Ahmad Al-Zubair Ahmad Al-Sannusi, Syrian lawyer Razan Zeytouneh and Syrian cartoonist Ali Ferzat. The award ceremony took place in Strasbourg on Wednesday, December 14, in the absence of Zeytouneh and Ferzat. The winners were chosen unanimously by the heads of the various political parties represented in the European Parliament.
